Is this game punishing flat, low top-spin players?

Postby xman » 31 Jan 2026, 12:57

A few months ago I created this discussion - viewtopic.php?f=15&t=36629&p=296826#p296826

And I feel like nothing has changed since then. I play very ocassionaly now, but hitting a winner on clay is impossible.

Also, I feel like this game punish flat-hitting powerbaseliners. When playing online (where, almost everyone is playing with the same "high top-spin, crazy angles" game) its impossible to stay in the rally. Once they hit a wide backhand shot, it is almost impossible to defend. In real life tennis, flat hitters does not face such a disadvantage against top spin players. And the weird thing is, you cannot even overpower them and they end up with more winners than you.

Maybe I am overreacting and just suck in this game, but playing with many top spin players, I always end up as the defending one.

Thanks @manutoo for your time and answer.

Hello,

1) there was a big change since last June : https://www.managames.com/tennis/doc/Te ... l#shoulder => "if you make it while standing in the Danger Zone, you will get much smaller handicaps on your strike success and speed. This allows to counter high topspin players on clay." . But it's pretty hard to do, it needs a lot of practice.

2) There's basically almost no flat hitter IRL anymore. The big 4 were putting more spin in their strikes than the clay specialists of the 90's, thanks to the change in string technology that occurred in the early 2000s. Del Potro & Berdych were exceptions. I'm not sure if they are still flat hitter nowadays, I don't follow tennis enough anymore... :fear:

What's your Topspin skill ? Jira, our current n°1 online player on the TE Tour, recommend 35% as a minimum ; it's not so bad, no..? :blackeye:

Hi, Manutoo. I'm using 5% Topspin skill. I'm gonna say, there are still players who play very flat compared to their opponents. Medvedev is a very good example of someone who hits very very flat. That's why he struggles so much on clay. Mannarino, Delpo, Berdych, Blake? (retired, of course)

5% is totally unplayable and it makes sense, the game now is spin focused. you can’t hit powerfully without adding spin to your shots if not you will miss long everytime. The rpms of the shots of the pros now are incredibly high on average and even medvedev backhand which is his flatter shot, it’s still above 2k rpms on average so the flattest hitter on tour right now hits more spin than any tennis player from 90s. You just can’t compete without spin anymore. It’s not realistic to expect to be able to pull it off in game either, you should be like 2 times better than your opponent. Even I can’t pull off less than 35% topspin against any player 2k elo or higher and I’m a very very offensive focused player so you can make your own conclusions

xman,
which 5%, the normal FH has 1200 rpm, and the acceleration FH around 2400 rpm. That'd very likely make an average noticeably under Medvedev, who had 2100 rpm in 2021, according to this post : https://www.reddit.com/r/tennis/comment ... one_of_my/ .

I think that a Topspin lower than 20% should be kept for flat hitters of the 90's or early 2000's.
